Executive Director of Narconon Arrowhead Gary W. Smith reports, ‘Although the number of people coming to us who are abusing pot is a smaller percentage of our total clientele, in the 30 years I have been in the drug
rehabilitation field I have not seen these numbers of individuals literally hooked on marijuana and unable to stop on their own.
We’ve known for a long time that marijuana use can lead to other drugs but it is shocking to see people whose lives are being destroyed by smoking pot just like others we are treating who are addicted to crack or alcohol.
I believe this is happening because the strength of the pot that is being smoked today is probably ten times stronger than the pot of 20 years ago.’

When one can be more comfortable in life without drugs or alcohol than with them, then the need or desire for them will cease.
Three of the
drug effects in any type of
addiction that must be fully resolved for any chance of lasting recovery are cravings, guilt, and depression.
Cravings can be mental or physical and are strong, uncontrollable urges to use drugs or alcohol despite the consequences.
Depression is the source of constant and significant amounts of discomfort that prompts continued
drug use in an attempt to alleviate the depression. Guilt is the feelings resulting from dishonest deeds and harm caused to the people closest to and most important to the addict. With unresolved feelings of guilt the addict is very prone and quite likely to continue using drugs or relapse to
drug use in a misguided attempt to escape the feeling of guilt.
In what seems an endless cycles this goes on and on with the
addiction and the cravings, guilt, and depression going in a downward spiral towards death or jail.
In many cases
addiction could be considered a side effect of
drug use at abusive levels.
No one intends to become an addict.
Addiction begins with a problem, discomfort or some form of emotional or physical pain for a person. This person is, like most people in our society, basically good. But he encounters a problem that is causing him physical or emotional pain and discomfort and for which he does not have an immediate answer. Perhaps, as a child or teenager, he has difficulty “fitting in.” Or maybe there are physical injuries such as a broken bone, a bad back or some other chronic physical condition, or the person has suffered intolerable losses in life.
